Title: Multilingual Grammars for Controlled Languages

Abstract: Controlled natural languages have the nice properties of clarity, absence of ambiguity, and support for formal reasoning. These properties are also the key ones in their typical applications, which include technical documentation, knowledge representation, and formal reasoning. However, the same properties are also useful in automatic translation, because they alleviate problems such as the need of disambiguation.

The talk will promote the idea of multilingual controlled languages, which consist of a semantic model accompanied by renderings in multiple simultaneous languages. Such systems permit high-quality semantics-based translation among all languages involved. Grammatical Framework, GF, is introduced as a tool for building such systems, either from scratch or by porting of an existing controlled language to GF. As an example, we will be present a GF implementation of ACE (Attempto Controlled English) ported from English to five other languages.
